Sheepshead Galore

Date Fished: 03/26/05 Water Temperature: 65 Water Clarity: Murky

Me, Brian, Weston, and Levar headed out to Fish Pass around 6:30 in the morning to see what was going on. Much to our dismay the North Jetty was extremely crowded with people fishing but we decided to try it out anyway. While walking to the end I saw someone with a rod bent over like crazy. By the time we got out there we saw him landing a really nice size Bonnethead Shark (around 3 1/2 feet). We took a spot on the left side and began fishing but because it was so crowded we were really in bad position to catch any fish. Another guy at the end connects and at this point I was starting to get pissed. We were 30 minutes into fishing with live shrimp and none of us have got a single bite. I put my rod down and go to watch the guy with a fish on fight. After a good solid 20 mintues I see a monster drum rolling over about 30 yards out. It was huge. The guy ends up landing it, it is 40 inches on the dot and weighs around 40 lbs. We still haven't got a single bite so we decided to move to the south jetty, which was less crowded, and try our luck. We make the walk over there and get a good spot towards the front of the jetty. We can still see people on the north jetty ripping it up and again we are getting no bites. Finally I look over and see Brian going crazy trying to reel in something. I grabbed the net and helped him land a really nice sized Sheepshead. A few mintues later a feel a tug and hook into an even nicer Sheepshead. Levar was soon to follow and Weston just decided to give up fishing and help net and keep the bait fresh while messing out on the jettys for the rest of the time we were there. We had the usual: a couple of break-offs, a couple lost in the rocks, a couple of "rock fish", one the I netted and then flopped out back into the water... But overall it was a really good day. Levar and I managed 16 nice sized Sheepshead and a drum each for a total of 18 fish. The hardest part of the day was carrying the ice chest back to the car... I bet it weighed a good 150 lbs or more.

Woke up Sunday and looked outside to a beautifull day. I knew that no matter what I was going to go fishing. I cooked a great barbeque and told my wife that I feel it today. She said what do you mean. I told her I just feel it, I feel that I will catch fish today. My only option was to bank fish from lloyd park. Performance wise I was having the worst day. I spent the first hour pulling out my birds nests (every single cast). At one point I was sitting in the mud having to restring my reel. What do you think happened when I got it back to where I could cast again? you guessed it I got a final birds nest. Keep in mind that this is my brand new reel, I am still trying to learn my drag and brake when I adjust lures. Actually in mind I had the drag and brake backwards. I was so pissed at this Abu pg5. I ended up going into the woods and found a good spot. I had to cast with my left hand because trees were everywhere. Long story short I caught my biggest bass so far. A nice 20 incher. This was a beautifull moment for me. Theres something special about being by yourself in nature and hooking your biggest bass to date. No competition - just you, nature, and your nice catch. I had my drag so tight that this fish felt like a brick in the water. She tried to get away but couldn't. I am so lucky that she didn't break my line with my drag so tight. I had never felt a bass of this power.
Next cast I lost the skirt to my spinner bait. Luckily I had one more lure. On my second cast with that lure . I caught another nice fish. he went 18 inches. It was as if the fish gods said, " you know he has had the worst day performance wise - Give him a bass or two but make them good". Goes to show you that you never know whats going to happen when you are out fishing. You could be doing everything right and never catch a fish or you could do everything wrong and catch your biggest fish to date.

Fish on!!!!

9:30-1:30 (Windy 5-10)Around the same time last year I caught two by hydrilla off Lynn Creek Park using jerk baits, well today there was a Media Bass Tournament and all my first choice spots were taken, except this one. I spent a my last hour with my daughter who I might add was an awesome co-angler today (netted my fish perfectly). She also got a nice one herself too. I missed a few bites and lost a nice one that jumped. Both using spinner bait.

Awsome day today. We made it around 9:00 am at Fish Pass expecting there to be crowds of fisherman, surfers and spring breakers. When we arrived there was hardly anyone on the jetty so we thought there might not be biting. But we were wrong from 9:00-3:00 we did nothing but land fish. We landed a total of 12 fish and our buddys landed around 20. Everything was biting on live shrimp and sea lice on a small carolina rig.

Just finished the Bassmaster Series-Toledo Bend- Hemphill, Texas
No wind about with a little overcast and rain to start off with and the sun peeking through every now and then. I landed one bass at 2.15lbs. as a non boater my partner caught 10.5lbs using carolina rigged lizard and spinner bait. I also landed my first blue catfish 5lbs. The fish were in there spawning phase and special spinner baits were the key to win this tournament--if you didn't have 2 "gold" willow leaf blades on your spinnerbait and a chartuese/white skirt you were out of luck.

Update:
I placed 42 out of 161 with 13.11
My Bassmaster profile is now available.
